A Shade of Art

I can’t think of anything that’s not expensive in America. Electronics, groceries, clothes, gas-well, everything except water and breathing.

However, if you are an artist, I found a hack that will help your budget for materials.

Discarded wood and pallets!

Mixed-medium art excels in turning discarded goods into a canvas of artistic beauty.

This blog will uncover good locations to find cheap wood for your artwork.

Thrift Store

Thrift stores receive donations from overstocked construction sites or leftover pieces at a discounted price.

Residential or business sites

This location is overlooked if you need leftover piles of scrap wood. Be warned: Ask the site supervisor for permission before taking anything.

Pallet Companies

These places have a surplus of discarded wood. It may not be free, but who can ignore a discount!

Abandoned house

You might find a window sticking out. I’m not saying you should trespass. If the weeds grow tall, then it can be free for all.

Yard sales

You will find a lot of antiques and wood boards, too.

Scrap yards

Now you can score big and find not only wood, but also collectible tin, metal, and broken electronics.

Remodeling Sites

People typically get rid of their wood furniture. This opens opportunities for you because one person’s discarded items can be another’s treasure.

Type of Woods

Walnut

It is wonderful for basic painting and wood sculpting.

Bass wood

This is the standard for wood art. It’s heavy and durable.

Birch plywood

It doesn’t create problems for wood art.

Oakwood

Oakwood can be expensive if you don’t find scraps. The quality is certainly worth the additional cost.

Pinewood

Pinewood is for acrylic or watercolor artists.

Obtaining wood for your art projects shouldn’t burn a deep hole in your pockets. The opportunities to find cheap or free wood are everywhere. You just need to know where to look. I recommend forming relationships with property owners or construction site managers because stocking up on wood to create your next masterpiece should be quick and easy.
